But don't count Europe out just yet. David Kehr, president of Humanoid Robotics, a division of Schaeffler Technologies, a German firm, believes that Europe has what it takes to compete.
Schaeffler Technologies, traditionally focused on automotive and industrial components, recently entered the humanoid robot sector through a partnership with UK start-up Humanoid. Under this deal, Schaeffler supplies the actuators, the mechanical joints and motors that power a robot's movement, and plans to deploy Humanoid's AI models across its own factories.
Speaking at the Machina summit in Paris, Kehr identified safety standards and faster training speeds as the industry's primary hurdles. He believes that Europe could lead on global safety standards, but warned that lawmakers must strike a careful balance. Regulation must not become so heavy that it stifles the continental humanoid and physical AI market.
The uphill battle facing European players was starkly reflected at the summit, where most presenting companies were headquartered in the US. European firms made up only a small fraction of the speaker line-up, highlighting the challenge of competing with established players.
